Ubuntu Education Fund's 10-Year Anniversary Gala
On April 28th at 7pm, 550 luminaries in business, entertainment, the arts, and social entrepreneurship will gather at Terminal 5, 610 West 56th Street, NYC to celebrate the 10- year anniversary of Ubuntu Education Fund, a non-profit organization created to give the people of Port Elizabeth, South Africa the means to improve their own community. The Ubuntu gala will feature a live performance by legendary South African jazz musician Hugh Masekela, accompanied by special guest Paul Simon. Actor Kevin Bacon will serve as Master of Ceremonies for the evening, with fellow actor / activist, Alan Cumming, as auctioneer.
Benefit host committee members; Donna Karan, Vikram Chatwal, Andie MacDowell, Kyra Sedgwick, Timothy White, Mark Seliger, and Business leaders; Ed Ludwig (BD), Vincent Mai (AEA Investors LP), and Dan Battsek (Miramax) will be in attendance to show their support.
Ubuntu Education Fund is the result of a chance meeting between South African teacher, Banks Gwaxula and American student, Jacob Lief in New Brighton Township, South Africa. The two men are now long time partners in a common cause, rooted in an abiding belief in the power of education and ubuntu, a universal bond of sharing that connects all of humanity. Since that meeting, Ubuntu has provided over 40,000 orphaned and vulnerable children in South Africa with essential educational resources and comprehensive life-saving HIV support services. The dynamic initiatives of the ubuntu model generate a cycle of empowerment in the Port Elizabeth townships, emboldening vulnerable children and their families to lead their communities toward healthy futures. The seamlessly integrated services are comprised of four programs: Empowerment, HIV Prevention Outreach, Clinical, and Care and Support. The Ubuntu model of service provision transforms their community members into peer educators, community role models, advocates and equal partners in the sustainable development of South Africa.
“Over the past 10 years, Ubuntu has grown from an idea to a blueprint for socially-responsible community development,” said President & Founder Jacob Lief. “We comprehensively support our children so that they not just survive, but thrive. Tonight, we come together to celebrate 10 years of success, to honor our thousands of supporters, and to help South Africa’s children realize their potential.”
